Permit Process

Face coverings are mandatory for visitors to City Hall.

The new 7th Edition Florida Building Code will become effective on January 1, 2021. This change will impact all regulated construction projects that have not been permitted by the City of West Melbourne Building Department by December 31, 2020.

In order to submit applications under the current 6th Edition Florida Building Code, applications must be submitted to the West Melbourne Building Department located at 2240 Minton Rd no later than 4:30pm on Thursday, December 31, 2020. All submittals made on or after January 1, 2021 must meet the new Florida Building Codes.

The new Florida Building Code contains substantial updates from the previous edition that will affect both residential and commercial projects. Notable updates include changes to roofing and wind load requirements and energy conservation standards. Permit Submission

Payment is due after plans examination has been completed. There are no upfront fees due at permit submission time. Payment can be can be made by cash, check or by using the credit card authorization form. Email the authorization form to buildingpermits@westmelbourne.gov.

Inspections are continuing as normal. Inspections must be called in Monday through Friday by 4:00 p.m. to be placed on the next business day’s schedule.

See below for the current, fill-able applications. All applications submitted MUST have a notarized qualifier signature. A contract or estimate signed by the property owner can be used in lieu of their notarized signature on the application.

PERMIT APPLICATIONS AND REQUIREMENTS

For residential permits, 2 sets of plans will need to be submitted.
For commercial permits, 3 sets of plans will need to be submitted.

Fence, roofing and mechanical permit applications can be emailed in to: buildingpermits@westmelbourne.gov.

Any other permits, such as screen rooms, windows/doors/shutters, solar, fire alarm/sprinklers, or new builds, will need to be dropped off or mailed in to City Hall. 

For fence and swimming pool permits:  If property is adjacent to a Melbourne-Tillman water canal, a permit is required for temporary access of right of way use. The following link is to the application with the Melbourne-Tillman Water Control District.

Plan Review

Our professional plan review staff is responsible for reviewing the plans submitted to permitting of both residential and commercial development. The primary function of the Plan Review section is to safeguard the public health, safety and general welfare through structural strength, means of egress, stability, conservation and fire protection.

Permit applications and construction plans are reviewed to verify that the proposed construction complies both with the City ordinances and the Florida Building Code. Our plan review staff is on duty and available for questions between 8:30 a.m. and 3:30 p.m.

Permit Approval

When the permit has been approved, the plans examiner will determine the appropriate fees, and the permit will be issued after payment has been processed.

Construction Inspections

Our professional inspection staff is responsible for conducting inspections on all permitted construction projects, residential and commercial. The primary function of the inspectors is to safeguard the public health, safety and general welfare. This is accomplished by verification that the construction was completed as specified in the submitted plans and is in substantial compliance with the Florida Building Code.
